Such kits are illegal as they are not optically matched with the older halogen headlamp assemblies. Xenon bulbs require specific optics - using a rebased retrofit kit will result in uneven light distribution. The 98-01 HID-spec headlamps are the absolute best headlamps available for the R129 SL chassis. The older 89-97 ECE H4 halogen headlamps are decent however, US-spec vehicles equipped with the 89-97 DOT HB1 halogen headlamps should seriously consider discarding their old lamps and upgrading. The US-spec headlamps are beyond terrible.
